Whats-Green-Living-All-About_.png

When you hear someone say ‘green living‘ or ‘go green’, are your eyes alight with curiosity? Or do you think that since you ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’, you’re living green? If you’re like most people today, you do the standard ‘green’ things, almost entirely unaware that there’s a greener, cleaner world of options available to you.

The truth is, opportunities to live better, cleaner and healthier abound. Cleaning green, eating organic, being kind to the environment, urban gardening and incorporating organic ingredients into your everyday life are all aspects that you can adopt in whole or in part. Even if you only chose to adopt one aspect of living greener, such as cleaning green, you’re a leap ahead of where you were before. Let’s discuss some aspects of organic living.

The biggest myth about eating organic is that, if you’re eating organic, your diet consists of sprouts, roots and berries, in that order. The fact of the matter is there are different levels of eating organic, so your diet can contain a wide variety of foods, all of which will be healthy and good for you, without sacrificing taste. For example, if you eat organic fruits and vegetables, you’re not ingesting pesticides and herbicides which commercial farms use on regular produce found in your grocery store, so you’re already eating healthier having changed one thing. Most people who eat organic enjoy free-pressed juice, almond and other nut butters, home-made wheat bread and chocolate, too!

Cleaning green is another practical aspect of organic living. So, what does ‘cleaning green’ mean? In a nutshell, you’re using natural ingredients to clean, thus eliminating harsh ingredients that require you to ‘open a window for ventilation’. Did you know that salt, sugar, vinegar and lemon juice, among other common household finds, double as cleaning products? There are many recipes online for homemade, organic cleaning solutions as well as commercially available products for everything from cleaning the windows to cleaning clothes.

What does it mean to be kind to the environment? When you are being kind to people or pets, how do you behave? Offering a shoulder to cry on, an ear for listening, an uplifting hug and advice are all acts of kindness to those you love or care about. You reach for things that are out of reach for someone else or you stoop when someone cannot bend. You cuddle and feed your pets because you love them; these, too, are acts of kindness. Since you cannot hug the earth or give it advice, how do you show the environment kindness? Eating organic, pesticide-free foods and foods, planting trees, driving environmentally friendly cars or riding bikes or walking and simply recycling, which keeps plastics, paper and cans out of landfills, are just a few things you can do to be kind to the environment.

These are just three of the many different aspects of organic, green living that the average person can adopt without doing anything terribly life-altering. There are many websites that allow you to explore urban gardening, alternative energy, creative uses for various products to keep them out of landfills and many other so-called green topics that enrich your life and the world around you at the same time.

Whats-Your-Favourite-Flour_.png

Flour has always been an integral element of Indian food fundamentals. It doesn’t matter whether the kitchen is from the North of India, from the South, from the East or the West; every homemaker depends in a major way on one core flour type for her daily preparations.

The interesting part is that most kitchens in modern India rely heavily on one particular kind of flour – like the Besan Flour or wheat flour or rice flour. What’s all the more disturbing is that due to the advent of western cuisine and fast-food influence, over independence and invisible dominance of some not-so-healthy varieties like the refined flour (also called Maida), have started showing some unpleasant effects.

Lifestyle diseases like obesity and blood pressure imbalance are on the rise. At the same time, deficiency of important nutrients is gaining widespread impact in every other household.

This is probably the best time to go back and go deep into the Indian history and its heartland. The core of Indian cuisine lies in a mix of different flavors and flours. Far-off villages and rural population of the country have for years been reaping locally-grown food and that includes a mix of flours that give them core strength and stamina to handle physically-intensive chores like farming, harvesting, forest livelihood, etc.

This is a wake-up call for urban eaters and it is high time we realize that just scraping by our daily food intake is not going to help us fuel our long-term health goals in any way. It’s easy and sometimes forgivable to miss important nutrients in the daily grind and fast blur of life. But sooner or later, small and big symptoms serve to remind us that our body needs everything in a good, balanced, multi-dimensional way.

To avoid one-dimensional food habits is the first step in striving towards that balance. Try to inculcate more types of flours in your daily diet. They not only supply essential fiber for the functioning of the digestive and renal system but also inject important vitamins and energy sources that the human body needs.

Having a good blend of organic ragi, besan, bajra Amarnath flour etc in the daily dough of wheat and rice flour would further add to the taste and variety that every Indian dinner table desperately looks for. In fact, many interesting recipes are made better with the use of varied proportions of ragi, wheat etc., together and many vegetables and snacks turn awesome in a quick batter of good rice or besan flour. They range from Gujarati Dhokla, Rajasthani Baati or Rotla, Maharashtrian Thalipeeth, to South Indian Idli or porridge or Mudde varieties. Of course, you can also make delicious cookies or cakes out of the amazing mix.

Once you start developing a habit of using and mixing these flours in your routine, you can also start experimenting with many dishes and tapping organic variants that add more health to this energetic mix.

Amaranth grain includes its ability to spur growth and development, protect the heart, boost the immune system, strengthen bones, increase circulation, optimize digestion, lower your appetite, and keep the hair looking young. Amaranth has been valued for thousands of years for its high concentration of proteins, vitamins & minerals. It is GLUTEN FREE, a viable alternative grain source.

Ragi and Millet flours give strength, and other flours give stamina. They also aid strongly in weight loss and regulation of metabolism. Issues like cholesterol levels or diabetes can be readily wiped out with a prudent mix of various grains and flours in a good recipe.

They lack glutens that other flours have. They pack fiber than other flours lack. They are low in unsaturated fats. Their natural and unrefined characteristics set them immediately apart from the usual flours that are often consumed in a hurry or out of habit. They are best used in their natural form and thus need not be polished, which is what gives them a distinct place in the food system.

These healthy organic flours like besan and Rice Flour are also, now as easily available and as affordable as their not-so-healthy counterparts. They are not bland, can be whipped into any recipe and plus, go flexibly well with each other in various formats.

Full of nutrition and ripe with minerals, iron, calcium etc., this is the same multi-grain wonder that those western-world Granola bars provide.

Why not pick something Indian and right within your arm’s reach for the same bundle of benefits?

Rice grown organically is not soaked in pesticides and fungicides from seed to package. Unlike conventional rice growers, who routinely apply chemical fertilizers to the soil, organic rice farmers use a range of natural measures to maintain and enhance soil fertility which involves crop rotation with deep-rooted legume crops or green manure/cover crops.

Organic rice production comes from organic farming system that apply practical management to preserve ecosystem, achieve sustainable production and control weed, pest and disease through various way such as recycling the residues of plants and livestock or vermicasting, selection and crop rotation, management of irrigation, cultivation and planting as well as the use of biological materials.

The shift from conventional to organic farming systems has produced food without damaging the earth’s resources such as air, water and soil and is still safe for the people to consume.

Interest in organic rice is increasing nowadays in response to issues regarding conventional agricultural practices, food safety and human health concerns. Hence, consumption of organic rice is believed to be safer and healthier, and expected to have greater nutritional value compared to conventional rice.

In this premise, it is believed that interest in consuming organic rice increases nowadays in response to issues concerning conventional agricultural practices, food safety and human health concerns. Organic rice also tastes better, safer, healthier and more nutritious than non-organic rice because of its method of production. Chemicals that have detrimental effects are not utilized in organic farming to ensure a safer and healthier environment.

Health-Benefits-of-Chamomile-Tea-1-1280x660.jpg

Camomile tea has been known for centuries for its soothing and relaxing properties, being used commonly to aid with problems such as insomnia, nervousness, as well as a comforting remedy during illnesses such as colds and flu.  In this article, We will describe some of the health benefits of organic Camomile tea.

Camomile tea has been known for centuries for its soothing and relaxing properties, being used commonly to aid with problems such as insomnia, nervousness, as well as a comforting remedy during illnesses such as colds and flu. What many people don’t know is that Camomile tea is an excellent remedy to help with digestion. Poor digestion is likely rooted in our poor food choices, poor eating habits, and the fast-paced lifestyles. It is also rich in antioxidants, it promotes healthy sleep ,good skin , calms muscle spasms and ,antibacterial and anti inflammatory Correcting these are the key to having a good health and better digestive system, but there are things that can be done to help alleviate daily chronic symptoms that many people experience such as gas, bloating, cramping, diarrhea and constipation. One of the best herbal remedies as a “cure-all” for nearly all digestive problems and other problems like Insomnia, Pimples Etc , is drinking a high-quality Camomile Tea.

Camomile tea contains essential oils and flavonoids, which actually relax the smooth muscles in the digestive tract, to relieve pain and cramping and promote normal peristalsis (the contractions of your intestinal tract that help move food along). Another class of compounds called sesquiterpenes have anti-inflammatory effects which help soothe the irritated lining of the gastrointestinal tract and reduce the inflammation associated with poor digestion. This tea also acts as a relaxant, to help calm down nervousness and tension. Many people who suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) also suffer from symptoms of anxiety, which have been shown to contribute to their digestive complaints. It is well known that the digestive tract has many connections to the central nervous system, and therefore anxiety and emotional issues can have a huge impact on how your body digests food. By drinking Camomile tea regularly, and calming the system, people with IBS can help their symptoms by directly affecting their digestive tract, and indirectly by helping to relieve nervousness.

For people who have very mild digestion issues, drinking Camomile tea on “as-needed” basis is sufficient. However, for people with chronic symptoms, it is essential to be able to get a high enough dose of the beneficial compounds, which can be achieved by drinking 3 to 5 cups per day, on a regular basis. Drink the tea while still hot, before all the beneficial essential oils evaporate.

The importance of drinking a high-quality Camomile tea cannot be understated. Most grocery-store brands contain merely the “dust” and bits of flower that remain after sorting and packaging. Organic Soul Camomile tea consists of high-quality whole flowers.

The benefits of organic foods seem like a closed case to many advocates of healthy living. To them, these benefits are a logical deduction. On the other side of the fence, critics of this current health craze jeer in gleeful mockery. They attempt to invalidate such claims, stating that conventional foods are just as healthy.

Who should we believe?

Since organically grown foods are anywhere from 10 to 30 percent more expensive than mass-produced foods, this matter has an impact on everybody’s billfold.

After all, why spend the additional bucks if there is no difference in the quality?

Before we attempt to resolve these bones of contention, let’s first identify what makes food “organic.”

Before 1940, there was no such thing as non-organic food.

Conversely, most food purchased in today’s supermarkets are non-organic.

So what’s the difference?

Organically grown foods are produced using old-fashioned farming methods.

Non-organic foods are produced using modern farming methods.

Of course, not everything that is modern is bad and not everything that is old-fashioned is good.

That said, here are some differences between these two types of foods:

Organic farmers use natural fertilizers.

Non-organic farmers use chemical fertilizers.

Organic farmers combat weeds using plant-killing compounds generated from the environment, along with crop-rotation, mulch and tilling.

Non-organic farmers use synthetic herbicides to get rid of weeds.

Organic farmers use natural pesticides to fight insects and disease.

Non-organic farmers use synthetic insecticides.

Unlike non-organic foods, organic food products don’t contain monosodium glutamate, artificial additives, and sweeteners, preservatives, processing aids, or added coloring and flavors.

Of course, coloring and flavors are added to mass-produced foods to make them look and taste better.

The billion dollar question is: “Are artificial additives harmful?”

Some say yes, some say no.

Though the USDA concedes that organically grown produce contains substantially less pesticide residues, they would like for us to believe that they are too insignificant to fret over.

Environmental Benefits

Environmentalists contend that organic farming benefits the environment, making a case that this type of farming conserves our water supply, preserves our soil, and reduces pollution.

Taste The Difference

Most of those choosing organically grown foods over non-organic foods claim these foods are not only more nutritious but more delicious too.

What Are The Health Benefits?

So what health benefits can be derived from choosing organically grown foods?

Bottom line, these foods contain a higher quantity of vitamins and minerals, which results in a better quality of health.

To replace the natural vitamins and minerals that are lost through our modern-day farming and food-processing techniques, synthetic vitamins and minerals are manufactured and then added to pick up the slack.

There are much confusion and many opposing opinions regarding the efficacy of synthetic vitamins and minerals.

Are Synthetic Vitamins And Minerals Just As Good As Natural Ones?

Some say yes. Some say no.

Natural vitamins come from sources that occur in nature while synthetic vitamins are made from cheap artificial ingredients that try to mimic nature.

According to organic soul, an online organic store the body won’t absorb most of the nutrients found in synthetic vitamins, we eliminate them.

More Nutrients, Less Nitrates

Summary

The disadvantage of switching to organically grown food is, you will probably spend 10 to 30% more on groceries.

The advantage of switching to organically grown foods is better health, better taste, and lower doctor bills.

Is the trade-off worth it?

Only you can answer that question.

Why-You-Should-Stop-Buying-Inorganic-Food-1.jpg

The term “organic” has been in the limelight recently and a lot of “organic” products have been appearing on grocery store shelves across North America. However, humans have been farming and eating “organically” throughout our evolutionary history. It was only during the 20th century where farmers were hard-pressed to supply food for a rapidly growing human population. The 20th century was the start of the industrial revolution and marked a paradigm shift in how business would be done. The goals of all titans of industry were to deliver as many products to the consumer at the most efficient low-cost way possible while contributing heavily to a company’s bottom line. This notion carried over to the agriculture sector and farmers and companies were trying to find a way to produce more for less. This resulted in science being manipulated to grow food. Synthetic chemicals were used to increase the production and shelf life of food to meet the growing demand of consumers. This involved the use of various chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, genetically engineered organisms, irradiation, and nanotechnology being manipulated to mimic nature. However, with the onset of diseases, it is very clear that the synthetic trade-off does not make economic sense in the grand scheme of things. This article will demystify what organic foods are and why we should all make the switch.

Organic vs. Natural: “Organic” and “natural” are sometimes used interchangeably; however their literal meaning and regulation are quite different. Organic foods are produced without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, growth hormones, and antibiotics – they are usually grown using renewable resources. Instead of chemical fertilizers, organic farmers use insects called “beneficial insects” as a method of pest control. In dairy, organic means that no antibiotics or hormones were given to cows the land is used for grazing and the feed has been certified. The feed also cannot contain animal byproducts. In fashion, organic clothing means that the materials are raised or grown in compliance with organic agricultural standards. When a product is labeled “organic” it is normally followed by a seal of certification normally issued by third-party government agencies such as USDA. Needless to say, true “organic” products are highly regulated and the companies that sell these types of products usually offer complete disclosure and transparency.

“Natural” products, on the other hand, are products that are made from substances found in nature but the products themselves are not regulated. A product can be considered “natural” even if it is prepared synthetically like in a laboratory. Any product derived from plants, animals or elements found on earth can earn the “natural” label. In the food industry today, there is no official definition of “natural.” A food labeled “natural” may contain pesticides, herbicides, toxic heavy metals, P.C.B.’s, fluorides, MSG, high-temperature cooking by-products, synthetic chemical vitamins, and other unnatural substances. Consumers should be weary of products labeled “natural” and the companies who manufacture them. Sometimes, however, companies temporarily label their products as “natural” while they wait to obtain the organic seal.

Why organic food is better: Organic food is a better choice than inorganic food for numerous reasons, most importantly for human health. First off, organic food is richer in essential vitamins and minerals. Consumers would need to eat a lot more inorganic food to even come close to the nutritional content of an organic food item. The reason for this has to do with how organic and inorganic items are farmed and the type of minerals the plants are absorbing. Minerals are elements that originate in the soil and cannot be created by living things. Plants absorb minerals from the soil, and animals get their minerals from the plants or other animals they consume. Most of the minerals in our diets come directly from plants, such as fruits and vegetables, or indirectly from animal sources. Inorganic food farming is practice on the large commercial scale and normally involves the use of synthetic fertilizers that contain minerals such as nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. These are the main minerals that a plant needs to survive and thrive and the ones found in most commercial fertilizers. With these three minerals, plants look better and the fruit lasts longer. However, unlike plants, humans and animals need a lot of other minerals in order to live healthily. Organic farmers use non-commercial fertilizers such as mineral-rich chicken and cow manure mixed in with compost. This so-called “green maturing” practice is more sustainable and results in a more nutritional plant.

Where to buy organic food: Aside from niche supermarkets and farmer markets, the best place to find certified organic products would be over the internet. Most independent organic food vendors have a website set up where they showcase their organic food and dairy products. However, unless you know exactly what and who you are looking for, most consumers will rarely find a shop that is truly “certified organic“.

Conclusion: As you can see, organic food is the most prudent choice. Although organic products are more expensive on a nominal basis, they are also more nutritious and contain more vitamins and minerals that your body needs. The intangible savings of going organic are manifold – you will actually consume less since you are getting a more nutritious fulfilling product, you do not need to complement your diet with vitamins, and eating healthy means less time spent in bed being sick while ingesting costly medications. Remember that in order to be certified organic, products must be grown and manufactured in a manner that adheres to standards set by the country they are sold in. Only a few countries (Australia, Canada, Sweden, U.K., Norway, India, Japan, and the USA) currently have policies in place that producers must adhere to in order to get the certified organic seal.

The key is to try to buy local and buy in season. Shopping online at organic marketplaces such as ORGANIC SOUL remains the most logical choice to source for a variety organic products.

Herbs and spices derived from plants are at the same risk as any other produce during conventional farming. As farms are exposed to bacteria, contaminants, and pests, farmers adopt measures that incorporate widespread pesticides use. However, this is not the end of the story. What happen after harvesting these herbs and spices is more outrageous.

The sterilization process of conventional spices and herbs utilizes toxic chemicals such as ethylene oxide. Scientific studies have shown that these chemicals are associated with causing cancer through extensive exposure and also affecting the central nervous systems. Moreover, the irradiation process which uses ionizing radiation (or in layman language washing the crops with radioactive particles) in order to eradicate potential contaminants is known to create carcinogenic by-products, as gamma rays is observed to easily penetrate even the high density packages.

Methods such as irradiation and fumigation (sterilizing the products with toxic gas) can be easily used due to their inexpensiveness. Ethylene oxide used during the process produces ethyl chlorohydrin, a potential carcinogen, as a by-product. The only process that is safe and also the most expensive is Steam technology. To commit to food safety and destroy microbes without compromising the flavor attributes of spices, steam technology is incorporated during Organic production of herbs and spices.

In many spices, produced with conventional methods, dangerous substances, such as MSG (monosodium glutamate), have also been found. Inaptly, manufacturers do not usually disclose the sterilization process used on their herbs and spices. Moreover, unlike organic spices, conventionally produced herbs and spices contain preservatives, additive fillers, and artificial flavors and colors, besides the usual natural adulterants such as mold, rat hair, dead insects, wire, etc. Buying organic helps in supporting small scale organic spice farmers who usually are poverty stricken. Organic spice manufacturers make sure that small scale farmers are paid fairly as they make every effort to save their produce from adulteration and contamination.

Considering the difference between regular and organic spices, it becomes apparent that using conventionally manufactured spices is not only a silent killer, but is also contaminating our food and affecting our health. Nowadays, buying organic spices is not hard and neither does it cost a lot. One can buy the spices used in daily production of food in large quantities from good organic food brands such as Organic Soul as they can last long for a few months to a few years. These herbs and spices will be free of harmful chemicals and will retain their medicinal value more than their conventional counterparts, making our daily intake of food nutritious and valuable to our bodies and health.

The Plough to Platter technique followed hundred years ago lost its meaning as the food industry revolutionized the way we eat. It not only changed the face of farming and but also that of our food by using chemicals which are harmful in every context. Over the years, prices rose and although sufficient food was available in the market, it became inaccessible by the poor. The 20th century brought about a major change. More food production was offered as a solution to the high prices and the New Green Revolution started.

With the developments in technology and science genetically engineered and genetically modified organisms came into existence. These crops were used abundantly to increase food production, however only in the most ideal environmental conditions. Moreover, engineered to stand high chemicals, they became a threat both to human health as well as the environment. Over the decades, awareness about chemicals, genetically modified organisms, the effects of conventional farming on the environment, and consciousness about how small scale farmers are being affected etc. has revolutionized our farming techniques. It wasn’t long ago when we realized that investing in GMO-seed technology may not be considered the best idea. This was followed with the return of the organic movement.

The increasing popularity of organic farming has changed the face of farming, food, environment and human health for the better. Buying something which is labeled organic, by good and reliable brands such as Organic Soul, means you are buying products not sprayed with pesticides, treated with antibiotics, or worse genetically modified. While conventional farming may be beneficial in terms of big scale food production, its effects on the environment, human health, as well as the home economies of small scale farmers cannot be overruled! Buying organic means you are helping in transforming the lives of poor farmers. In the light of this, the return of organic farming has become a major revolution of the 21st century.

In organic agriculture, the most successful farms are the ones which mix a number of crops and build the soil with composted manure. Transforming food waste into high quality compost can be done easily with investment in infrastructure for small-scale production of organic produce. Besides this, helping the small-scale farmers understand the concept of organic better and educating them on its benefits can bring about a major change. For the small scale farmers who believed that only expensive fertilizers and pesticides can result in higher production and therefore, higher profits, it is important to not only encourage them towards organic agricultural techniques but also make sure that they are getting their due profit from it.

The return of the organic movement has seen quite its success with the increase in the number of companies who are collaborating with small scale farmers, such as Organic Soul, but a lot of people are still unaware about how buying organic is the right way to eating and remaining healthy. The truth is if you do not become a part of this movement, as an organic producer or even as a customer, you will never understand the first hand benefits of organic. Therefore, it is not only important to grow organic, but also support organic farmers directly by buying and eating more organic!
